Welcome to your tour of the last kingdom in Sri Lanka.
The Kandyan Kingdom, was founded in the late 15th century and endured until the early 19th century.
By 1592, The Capital City of Kandy, was the last remaining independent kingdom in the island. All the coastal regions had been conquered by the Portuguese. The Kandyan king, in a desperate attempt to rid the island of the Portuguese, signed a treaty with the Dutch, in 1638. There was however a bitter dispute, and the dutch after defeating the portuguese, took over the coastal regions, instead of handing it back to the Kandyan King. Great Britain took over the dutch interest in Sri Lanka during the Napoleonic wars, and the very next year, after taking over, launched an unsuccessful attack to gain control of the Kandyan kingdom.
