Walk back in time as you visit one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world and become immersed in the culture and history of this world heritage site. Hear intriguing stories from the past that will bring to life the characters and places of a bygone era.

The ambience inside will enthral you, with the smells of fresh flowers,incense sticks and coconut oil lit candles and lamps while your audio guidel enlightens you on the beliefs of the Buddhist faith and the architecture behind it.

Watch the daily pujas with the rhythmic drums and chanting and hear all about its significance and importance.

Starting Point: Temple Gate

Timings: It is best to visit the temple during the puja timings in order to fully see the spectacle of offerings. Be vary of Full Moon (Poya days) as they are very busy with locals.

On Wednesdays, the bathing of the relic with a herbal preparation (scented water and fragrant flowers) takes place. It is called the Nanumura Mangallaya. This holy water is of substantial spiritual reverence and is distributed among the devotees.

Points to note:

  • Wear clothes that cover your legs and your shoulders.
  • Cover your feet in socks to avoid burning your feet while walking barefoot as you will be asked to remove your shoes.
  • Buy some flowers at the entrance, if you like to make offerings at the various altars throughout the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
